Amara didn’t give up when her application wasn’t approved…

Amara looks around at her beautiful forever home and thinks back to when she first applied to Habitat Seminole-Apopka back in February of 2019. Unfortunately, she had made a series of financial missteps causing her to have too much debt in collections to be accepted into the homeownership program (read about our application requirements here). She admits when she first received that application denial, she thought it was the end of the road for her.

Amara dreamed of homeownership, but she worried that without a miracle, her finances would hold her back forever.

However, that was not the end of the road for Amara. Habitat for Humanity believes that everyone deserves a decent and affordable homeownership opportunity. Everyone deserves the opportunity to reach financial stability. Together with our Homebuyer Services manager, Cydney, and a partner organization called Operation HOPE, Amara was able to create and achieve financial goals to get her debt under control. Knowledge is power. Resources equal opportunity. Amara was provided information and resources that she had previously never had access to. Within a few months, she was able to turn her financial situation around and reapply to Habitat’s Homeownership Program. This time she was accepted!!

Amara’s story may be special- but it is not rare. Countless families in our community lack the knowledge and resources they need to reach financial stability. With the options and the know-how they can regain control of their financial future.

The Financial Focus program comes from this determination to give access to financial training to more families like Amara. The Focus program includes 7-weeks of financial literacy and a 6-month mentorship to help more families to be financially independent and confident.
