Giving Back Is Fulfilling and Beneficial

We at Habitat Seminole-Apopka are grateful for those who volunteer their time and talent to help us build affordable homes for hardworking Central Florida neighbors. When we thank our volunteers, more times than not they tell us how much THEY appreciate the opportunity to work so hard and what fun they had hammering, sawing, framing, painting, and more. They feel invigorated, fulfilled, and often can’t wait to come back and do it again!

These experiences and our own sleuthing have shown there are real health and happiness benefits to volunteering, in addition to helping others. Not much is more fulfilling than giving back to the community these days. It simply makes us feel good! Not only does “giving back” offer a great internal sensation, but we believe it’s a big part of life’s journey.

We think volunteering feels so fulfilling because it is a part of our nature to contribute to society and impact the lives of others. In addition to providing a sense of happiness and good feeling, the positive benefits include relieving the stresses that come with everyday life, meeting new people, and potentially creating long-lasting friendships. Additionally, seeing people who are in a different situation than you are offers a new perspective on your own life.

There are many ways to give back in Seminole County, Apopka, and the Central Florida community. From volunteering to donating money to hosting charitable events, there is an opportunity for everyone to make a substantial impact. We’re so glad you’ve chosen us!

Building Alongside Future Homebuyers

One of the most rewarding approaches to giving back in Central Florida is to experience your impact firsthand by being a hands-on participant in the field. Getting your hands dirty and contributing your time right alongside of the person who is putting in their sweat equity to buy that house or another Habitat home enables you to truly see the fruits of your labor.

Who are the people we serve? Our Future Homebuyers are a range of individuals and families, young to old, blue-collar workers to helping professionals, veterans, single moms, teachers, and police officers. They are people who work hard, yet often still can’t make ends meet, much less buy a decent home in which to raise their family.  We’ve seen the incredible impact building our homes with them has had on individuals, groups, donors, and the entire community.

A Variety of Volunteer Opportunities

We have a variety of volunteer opportunities for Central Florida individuals and groups, which enable us to keep our overhead costs to a minimum and increase the funds that can be applied directly to construction and serving more families. If you have a special skill or interest that isn’t listed, please let us know!

Build affordable homes – Since we build homes throughout the week and on weekends, the physical construction of homes at our building sites is a premier opportunity! Every home we have ever constructed takes the support of hundreds of volunteers. Approximately 3,000 volunteer hours are spent on every project.

If you are not familiar with house building, that is completely fine. Our construction site supervisors, who are talented professionals, will train you and help you learn everything you need to know. If you decide to join us, not only are you helping your community, but you will take part in a completely new experience. The only requirements are your passion, ambition, and desire to make an impact.

It is easy to sign up for a build. Once you select a build day, please arrive sharply at 8 a.m. for training. A build day will typically last from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All volunteers must be 16 years of age or older to participate on a Habitat for Humanity construction site.

Build Hope through mentoring, committee work, photography, office help, etc. These opportunities are equally as important to our nonprofit organization, as you’ll work directly with our Future Homebuyers, office staff, or at events such as Home Dedications.

Committees are critical to the success of our mission. Whether finance, construction, coaching or mentoring skills are your talents, we are interested! As a part of our program, we collaborate side by side with applicants and future homebuyers, guiding them through the Habitat for Humanity process step by step. Our volunteer mentors help do that by working directly with an individual or family who is moving into one of our new homes.

If you like office work, we can use your help with critical administrative tasks to organize and prepare for our homebuilding and financial education projects.  If you are a photographer or videographer, we’d love to have your volunteer skills onsite at our Home Dedications and Future Homebuyer photo-shoots, etc.

Build Community by having your organization come as a group or by scheduling a Company Team Build Day. Your company, faith family, civic group, or organization will have a transformational, teambuilding experience and will give back to the community at the same time!

Company Team Build Days are particularly popular to encourage collaboration between coworkers, as well as build character and a sense of community. Build days encourage work teams to become closer and accomplish a goal together.

For volunteer groups larger than five, we ask that you reserve a build day in advance by reaching out to Craig at Volunteer Services.

Many Ways to Help, More Impact and Spirit

This variety of opportunities allows Central Florida volunteers to select a role that is most appealing to them and compatible with their strengths or preferences.

No matter what role one selects, Habitat Seminole-Apopka volunteers know they will have a significant impact on their neighbors and the entire community. When people come together under the same unified mission, they coalesce to work on something bigger than themselves. And they want to come back! This collaborative spirit has enabled us to build the affordable homes our Future Homebuyers deserve, and to do it for more than 30 years!
