Our Inspiration and How We Began<\/em> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 1968, on a community farm outside of Americus, Georgia, a group of people formed a belief known as \u201cpartnership housing\u201d built on the concept that those in need of safe, stable shelter could work \u201cside by side with volunteers to build decent, affordable houses.” These homes were funded through the \u201cFund for Humanity\u201d which was a combination of no-interest loans provided by supporters and money earned through fundraising. After bringing the concept to communities in Africa, Millard and Linda Fuller, two of the original creators, returned to Georgia to form Habitat for Humanity<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspired by this\u00a0mission,\u00a0St. Stephen\u2019s Lutheran Church\u00a0in Seminole County, Florida\u00a0rallied\u00a0the community\u00a0together\u00a0to help\u00a0those in the area who needed affordable homes. The church\u00a0established\u00a0Habitat for Humanity of Seminole County in June 1991, and their first project helped\u00a0a\u00a0local elderly woman who was living in a home that had deteriorated beyond repair.\u00a0The team was able to remove the old, unsafe structure and build a new home where she and her family could\u00a0live with pride and security.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After years of growth, Habitat for Humanity of Seminole County merged with the Apopka, Florida affiliate in 2011, forming Habitat for Humanity of Seminole County and Greater Apopka. The establishment of this affiliate has helped make the dream of owning a safe home a reality for hundreds of local community members. These first steps marked the beginning of a lasting commitment to making homeownership possible for families throughout Central Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing Our Impact<\/em> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Over the past 35 years, our affiliate has grown into a dedicated team of about 19 hardworking staff members, 600 unique volunteers annually, and numerous private-public partners. It takes collaboration to build community, but partnerships with local businesses and government, and approximately 300,000 volunteer hours make our organization\u2018s mission possible. Together, we all work to expand access to affordable housing, serving more families, and contributing to affordable housing solutions across Central Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to building homes, we have also grown our impact through educational workshops offered to the public at no cost. Our resources include a six-week virtual Financial Academy<\/a> series, a monthly HUD certified workshop<\/a>, and biannual homeownership classes included in the Serie de Vida Sostenible<\/a>. These programs are designed to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve long-term financial stability and homeownership, helping to create well-rounded, informed, and empowered community members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since our educational resources were first offered, over 1,000 families have been served both inside and out of the Habitat Seminole-Apopka community. As a result, over a dozen families have purchased homes outside of Habitat Seminole-Apopka in the last two years, helping to grow the community even further.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Families We Serve<\/em> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Since 1991, our affiliate has built more than 260 homes<\/strong>, helping hundreds of families and individuals secure safe living conditions for affordable costs. As of today, 67 families paid off their mortgage in full, and the impact extends far beyond each home. The homes built and the homeowners empowered contribute to stronger neighborhoods, increasing property values, and long-term stability for families. Homeownership also creates opportunities to build generational wealth, passing down financial security, knowledge, and a deep sense of community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jazm\u00edn<\/a>, is a single mother, full-time insurance account manager, master\u2019s student at Florida State University, and eager future homebuyer. She completed her 150 hours of sweat equity in less than four months, balancing work, school, and parenting along with the program. Through her commitment, Jasmine aims to show her seven-year-old son what hard work looks like. Jasmine looks forward to creating a stable home for her and her son to grow and thrive together.   <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Priscila <\/a>is a dedicated medical assistant and single mother who moved to Central Florida in search of a better life for her two sons. After years of living in an increasingly unaffordable apartment with ongoing maintenance challenges, she was determined to find a safe and permanent home for her family, which led her to apply to the Habitat Homebuyer Program.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The home Priscila purchased holds a special history as it was originally built by Habitat for Humanity of Seminole County and Greater Apopka more than 20 years ago for a woman named Yvonne. She recently paid off her mortgage in full and sold the home back to Habitat, earning approximately $200,000 in equity, which allowed her to move closer to her children and grandchildren. In March 2026, the home was refurbished during Habitat Seminole\u2011Apopka\u2019s Women Build fundraiser<\/a>, where volunteer teams raised funds and worked alongside Habitat\u2019s construction staff to renovate the home. Once renovations were complete, Priscila was able to purchase the home and move in with her sons, creating a stable place where her family can build lasting memories. <\/p>\n<\/div>

Keetonia<\/a>, a single mother of three children with a background in education, faced significant housing challenges after a sudden and unaffordable rent increase. After encountering setbacks in her search for a home, she found hope through Habitat\u2019s Homebuyer Program. Once in the program, she and her children dedicated themselves to earning their sweat equity, finding excitement in completing it together. Now, three years into homeownership, Keetonia and her family enjoy stability, security, and a strong sense of community. Her journey has provided her with lasting financial skills and homeownership knowledge, empowering her to develop a strong foundation for her family\u2019s future.  <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Looking Ahead<\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

As we celebrate 35 years of serving Central Florida communities, we are also looking forward to the future. Our next milestone will include Plaza del Legado<\/a>, a single-family home development designed to create affordable homeownership opportunities for 19 local families. This new attainable housing community will offer families the opportunity for stability, security, and support to build a positive future for generations to come.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
