Due to the current fluctuations in job positions and income, today’s workforce no longer fits the traditional path to homeownership established decades ago. In her recent op-ed published in the Orlando Sentinel, Habitat CEO, Penny Seater discusses how rising insurance rates, construction costs, and Central Florida’s limited options for affordable living widens the gap for families striving for stability.

In order for areas to thrive, affordable homeownership must be treated as essential community infrastructure. Penny works to lead Habitat Seminole-Apopka’s team in helping to shift this perspective through partnerships with local government, corporate collaboration, and a business model centered on education, sweat equity, and long-term sustainability. However, for real change to occur, broader support for affordable housing is needed.

As housing affordability becomes the focal point in this year’s legislative sessions, now is the time for residents, employers, and community leaders to act. Advocacy, volunteerism, and investment can help ensure more families can live where they work, strengthening our region’s workforce, economy, and future.
