With her uncle as head of the Housing and Urban Development Department (HUD) in Palatka, Florida, Kelly grew up understanding how the department’s grants, certified counseling, and educational resources help create financial freedom for citizens. She expressed that this exposure to HUD’s mission shaped how she thinks about housing today.
Kelly first learned about Habitat for Humanity through a coworker who had previously worked at a Habitat affiliate. She later found out more about Habitat Seminole-Apopka’s homebuying program through a county newsletter detailing the no-cost educational resources available. Recognizing an opportunity to purchase a safe and accessible home, Kelly decided to apply for the program. Now, she is excited to be purchasing her home through Habitat Seminole-Apopka, a HUD certified organization serving Central Florida communities.
As she works to overcome degenerative disc disease and fibromyalgia, Kelly looks forward to a stairless, climate-controlled home that will allow her to continue to regulate her conditions and grow stronger. Reflecting on a new home, she said, “Having appropriate housing would significantly improve my quality of life, reduce physical strain, and help me better manage my health conditions.” Kelly also looks forward to being part of a community that values togetherness, living in a secure neighborhood where she can walk to her mailbox safely every day.
